HAVE YOU HEARD... ABOUT THE WEIGHT DEBATE
The skeletal frames that model the catwalks of today are very different from the strong, athletic supermodels of the 1980’s.
Last September, the Fashion industry banned several models from appearing on the Catwalks in Madrid who at size 0 (UK size 4) were deemed to be ‘too skinny’. At the latest London Fashion week though, the organizing British Council fell short of issuing such a ban-although they did ask designers to use only ‘healthy’ looking girls.
Sir Paul Smith was among the British designers who called for the industry to stop using girls with a body mass index below 18-(which is officially deemed unhealthy).
The gossip mags meantime are full of rumours and speculation about so-called celebrities with weight problems-David Beckham is said to be concerned about Victoria's ultra-thin figure preferring more curves. There are fears that their move to California may not help as Los Angeles is believed to be the birthplace of the super-skinniness trend.
Anorexia and Bulimia are the Eating disorders that often seem to affect mainly young adolescent females [though increasingly males too!] and both are regarded as having an emotional and psychological basis.
Anorexia Nervosa, is a condition that often begins with a perhaps harmless weight-loss diet. It has the highest mortality rates of any mental illness, and approximately one in five sufferers die prematurely. According to the Eating Disorders Association, there are presently more than 500 pro-Anorexia web sites on the internet that promote it as a ‘lifestyle choice’ rather than a disease that can be fatal...
On the other hand, Obesity and its health implications, (thought to included Heart Disease, Diabetes and Arthritis) are also in the news and there is even a government campaign planned to counter childhood obesity.
Presently three quarters of all Britons are thought to be overweight.
